How Can I Reach the Desert from Fes?

How to visit the desert from Fes?

To get to the desert from Fes, you can join the 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour, which includes transportation by private modern vehicle with air conditioning. This tour will take you through scenic routes and stops at various attractions along the way.

Here is an itinerary of 3 days Fes to Marrakech desert tour:

Day 1: Fes to Merzouga (467 Km)

Your 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour commences as we pick you up from your riad or hotel in Fes. We set out on a southbound journey, traversing the picturesque Middle Atlas mountains, beginning with Ifrane and Azrou.

En route, we pause at the cedar forests, a haven for the Barbarian Apes in their natural habitat. Our path leads us through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass towards Midelt, where the captivating Ziz Gorges, etched into volcanic rock, unveil remarkable vistas of the Middle-Atlas plateau and subtle hints of the desert, as you near the city of Errachidia.

Following a satisfying lunch, our expedition takes us through the scenic Ziz Valley, guiding us to Erfoud, Rissani, and ultimately, Merzouga. After a refreshing glass of mint tea, we securely store our luggage and embark on an unforgettable camel ride to a Berber camp nestled amidst the towering Erg Chebbi Sad Dunes, the highest in North Africa. The camel trek, which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, brings us to the Berber tents that will be our home for the night.

These tents are thoughtfully equipped with comfortable mattresses, warm blankets, and cozy cushions. As the evening unfolds, we gather around a crackling campfire, savoring a delightful dinner while immersing ourselves in the rhythmic beats of traditional Berber drums beneath the star-studded desert sky. This marks the end of our first day on the Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour.

Day 2: Merzouga to Dades Gorges (255 km)

Daybreak treats us to a mesmerizing sunrise over the vast sea of dunes. After relishing a delicious breakfast and invigorating shower at the camp, we have the option to return to Merzouga, either by camel or 4WD.

Next, our desert journey leads us away from the Sahara towards Tinghir, affectionately known as “the city of the mountain” in Tamazight. Here, we’re captivated by the unique contrast of palm trees and the distinctive hues of the local houses, painting a vivid image against the backdrop of the desert.

Continuing our adventure, we arrive at the awe-inspiring Todra Gorges, where colossal rock walls soar to heights of over 200 meters. After exploring this natural wonder, we proceed to the Dades Valley, celebrated for its towering gorges and breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains gracing the distant horizon.

Our second evening on the Fes to Marrakech desert tour unfolds at a charming riad, offering a delightful conclusion to another day of exploration.

Day 3: Dades to Marrakech (315 Km)

On the final day of our 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour, we traverse the enchanting Valley of the Dades and the Valley of the Roses, ultimately arriving in Ouarzazate. Here, we explore the historic Kasbah of Taourirt.

A mere 25 kilometers further along our route, the remarkable Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou appears before us. This UNESCO World Heritage site has earned fame as the backdrop for cinematic masterpieces like “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Protective Sky,” and “Babel.”

Continuing our journey, we ascend the Tizi N-Tichka pass, graced by the awe-inspiring landscapes of the High Atlas mountains. Our odyssey concludes in the vibrant “Red City” of Marrakech, where it’s time to bid farewell to your guide, marking the end of our remarkable 3-day desert adventure.
