3 days tour from Marrakech to the remote Erg Chigaga dunes

Morocco desert tours from Marrakech. If you are planning a Sahara desert tour from Marrakech, it can be confusing what desert to choose.

Generally, the most popular desert tours with groups are 3 days/2 nights trips from Marrakech to the Merzouga desert and Erg Chebbi dunes. In some places, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise to 150 meters, spanning an area of 28 kilometres from north to south. The Erg Chebbi dunes are easy to access. Merzouga is literally on the edge of the impressive dunes. Because of the easy access and popularity, these private Sahara desert tours from Marrakech are the most popular and have a reasonable price. You can read more about it and book it here.

The 2 days/1 night Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to the Zagora desert is a shorter option. The desert around Zagora town is rockier, without such impressive dunes as the Merzouga desert and closer distance to Marrakech.

Now, the 3rd private  desert tour option from Marrakech I am offering to book here is the Sahara desert close to rural M’Hamid El Ghizlane town and the beautiful dunes of Erg Chigaga. The Erg Chegaga dunes are located about 45 km west of M’Hamid. This desert tour from Marrakech option is perfect for travellers who want a more authentic Sahara desert experience and avoid other traveller groups.

The 3 days and 2 nights private  Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga (or Erg Chegaga) dunes is a perfect choice if you want to explore the more remote Sahara desert of Morocco. The Sahara desert close to rural M Hamid El Ghizlane town has the beautiful dunes of Erg Chigaga. Some Erg Chigaga dunes are over 100 m high with an area of approximately 35 km by 15 km; it is the largest and wildest erg in Morocco. Read more about the differences between Sahara desert locations in Morocco in my article Merzouga vs Zagora for the Sahara desert trip in Morocco?

The Erg Chegaga dunes are about 45 km west of M Hamid. The road to the dunes takes you through a stone desert, or hamada . You can only reach the desert by off-road 4×4 vehicle. I love Erg Chegaga because it s such a wild experience. You can be alone in the desert and meet the sunset without seeing other travellers around.

! The structure of the private  tour: you start the tour for the 2 days/1 night Zagora desert experience.   After spending the night in the Erg Chegaga desert, you will return to Marrakech city.

3 days/2 nights shared Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga

In Marrakech, you will start your private  3 days/2 nights tour to the Erg Chigaga Sahara desert at 7.20 am. During your first day s drive, you will cross the famous High Atlas mountain road, Tizi n Tichka. It is the highest road mountain in Morocco (2260m). This twisty mountain road is breathtaking; on the way, you will have a stop for pictures and a coffee break.

The first stop is at the UNESCO World Heritage site listed Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, dating to the 12th Century and one of the most iconic Morocco monuments. Many Hollywood and international films were shot in Ait Ben Haddou. You will meet the local English-speaking guide there, who will guide you to the Kasbah. After leaving Agdez city behind, you will pass the panoramic views of the  Draa Valley, where many beautiful Ksour and Kasbah stand.

Before sunset, you will reach the Zagora desert. Time to enjoy your 1-hour sunset ride to the desert campsite. You will have a delicious Berber dinner and live music around the campfire.

Your second day will start with a delicious Berber breakfast and riding a camelback, you will meet the beautiful sunrise. Then, you will be transferred to a 4 4 vehicle to continue your desert adventure. Before reaching the M Hamid El Ghizlane town, you will explore the Quran library at Tamegroute. Finally, you will arrive at M Hamid El Ghizlane town. This city is called the End of the road in Morocco after the village, the road finishes. The Algerian border is only 24 km away from M hamid. After lunch, starts the desert adventure.

The road to the Erg Chigaga dunes takes you through a stone desert, or hamada , reachable only by off-road 4×4 vehicle. The off-road from M hamid town to the desert is a lifetime experience. On the way, you will spot hundreds of wild camels, and goats will pass the temporary homes of Nomad families. There is not much civilisation around, only a few jeeps jumping through the low dunes and shepherds. Once, I remember seeing a camel giving birth while walking.

You will arrive at your desert camp at Erg Lihoudi to spend a night under the stars in the desert camp. You will see the sunset, walk around dunes, and enjoy delicious Berber dinner, fire sounds, and songs.
